Creative Pursuits
Listen to the saddest or angriest or most ridiculously lovey love songs on repeat
Organize (or ask someone to organize) an event that honors your loved one: pick up trash, volunteer, attend a concert
Bake the blueberry pie that you used to make together
Wear the old flannel shirts of your loved one (without washing them) so you can smell their smell
Perform seemingly impossible feats: run a marathon, climb a mountain, get out of bed in the morning
Mark their memory on your body with a gorgeous tattoo (sometimes with the deceased’s ashes in the ink)
Gather with those who will tell all the juicy stories you’ve not yet heard about the deceased
Visit a rage room to throw and break shit
See a medium(s) to connect with the deceased
Attend religious services to connect with the deceased
Create an altar for Dia de los Muertos and keep it up year-round
Bring coffee and glazed doughnuts (their favorite) to the cemetery every Friday to chat with your loved one at their gravestone
Notice signs of ongoing spiritual presence: numbers, dragonflies, shiny pennies on the ground
“On Joy & Sorrow”
“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.”
